New experiences can impact positively on your mental and physical health!

“Travel broadens the mind”. Needless to say I agree with this statement. In the past number of years I have ventured to different countries and seen so many new places. I’ve always been grateful for these opportunities and new experiences, this is has impacted my mental health positively and made me a more open minded person!

I am aware that travelling and going further around the globe can cost a lot of time and money, however new experiences like these can happen closer to home. Whether it is to the local café to taste new types of fresh, seasonally, produced foods or to try new recipes with different ingredients and spices in your cooking at home. Even venturing out for low-cost day trips; Ireland is a beautiful place, it’s rich in culture and has an abundance of good quality foods. By stepping away from the mental chaos of your daily life, stresses and worries for a short period of time to recharge the batteries and absorbing ourselves with our natural surroundings.

Here are a few tips to how trying new experiences can improve her overall mental, physical health and well-being:

1. If possible, plan a day trip or hike once a month with your family or friends. Going on these types of adventures are usually for our physical health as well as our mental health. According to psychology today [1]; sharing new travel experiences or adventures can strengthen relationships!

2. Create a list of places you’d like to visit in the next six months or a year. Ensure that they are realistic and within budget.

3. It is okay to be selfish, if you prefer to do day trips or go to theatre or visit that new café alone, there’s nothing wrong with that. Spending time alone with your thoughts to reflect and create headspace isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

4. Maybe limit phone/screen time when you are out exploring new places, something I need to work on myself, but if you visit somewhere new set aside 10mins to take whatever pictures for the memories then you can try and put your phone and take everything in through your own eyes and not through a screen of a phone.

5. When on day trips or doing a hike. Ensure you bring healthy and nutritious snacks to and do not forget to bring water to keep yourself hydrated throughout the day. I would bring nuts, fruit, dark chocolate or protein bars/balls. Even make overnight oats load it with toppings of good fats to keep you fuller for longer and saves you buying extra meals when you are out.

6. If you are dining out aim for a balanced meal with extra veggies/other micronutrients and don’t be afraid to try new things! I tend to go for foods I wouldn’t cook really cook at home, mainly seafood, certain meat dishes and different types of vegetarian dishes. Although after a hike or an active day walking around…. I say go for that cake!!! :)
